Clinical Understanding

What Is Active Acne?

Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the pilosebaceous unit, which comprises the hair follicle and sebaceous gland. When follicular keratinization prevents proper skin shedding, sebum builds up in the pore, forming a microscopic plug called a comedone.

In this oxygen-depleted environment, the anaerobic bacterium Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) proliferates, triggering an immune response that leads to papules, pustules, and deep inflammatory nodules.

What Can Trigger Active Acne?

Hormonal Fluctuations

Androgen surges stimulate sebaceous glands to overproduce oil.

Bacterial Overgrowth

Rapid multiplication of C. acnes bacteria within trapped follicles.

Slow Cellular Turnover

Dead keratinocytes adhere to each other, blocking follicle openings.

Lifestyle Factors

High-glycemic diets, psychological stress, and comedogenic products.
